2,300-year-old alcoholic beverage found in China 14:27

Chinese archaeologists, together with colleagues from Stanford University, discovered a bronze bottle containing a fermented alcoholic beverage while excavating a Qin Dynasty tomb in Shaanxi Province. The drink is estimated to be around 2,300 years old. The results of the research scientists Shared In the MDPI journal.

The vessel was found in the ancient Yantsun cemetery, which dates back to the Warring States period and the beginning of the Qin dynasty. In one of the tombs, researchers found eight bronze and clay bottles, one of which was sealed. Scientists opened it and tasted its contents. According to the researchers, the liquid was completely transparent and had a metallic taste.

Laboratory analysis revealed that the vessel was filled with a fermented alcoholic beverage used as a funeral rite. According to scientists, the drink was a starter made from legumes and millet plants, as well as wheat, barley, rice and other ingredients. The composition also included traces of mold fungi and yeast, which contribute to the fermentation of plant materials.
