Within the scope of the Clean Arctic project in Karelia, work has begun to clean the lands of the city of Kem. The press service of the project reports this.
Cleanup work is planned to continue until June 30. The cleansing began in the village of Rabocheostrovsky, where the famous film “The Island” with Pyotr Mamonov was shot. This is also a historical place where the Kemsky crossing point of the Solovetsky camp, built for prisoners a hundred years ago, is located.
Volunteers started cleaning Yak Island today. This is a more difficult task due to logistics; environmental volunteers were transported by boat. Yak Island is popular with travelers but suffers from deposits of garbage washed ashore in the White Sea by tides.
Andrei Nagibin, head of the Clean Arctic project, noted the uniqueness of this expedition. He drew attention to the successful work on improving tourist routes in Karelia in recent seasons.
Project participants state that there is not much garbage in the region, which is rare for the Arctic region. Over the course of three years, they collected approximately 50 tons of waste and cleaned 163 hectares of land.
80 volunteers, including representatives from different regions of Russia, participated in the cleaning. Despite the bad weather and rain, they managed to collect nearly 500 kilograms of garbage.
The Clean Arctic project attracted more than 6,000 volunteers who cleaned 491 hectares and collected approximately 12,000 tonnes of waste over three seasons. One of the priorities of the project since 2023 has been the improvement of the residences of the families of air defense soldiers.
Previously, Clean Arctic volunteers collected Almost 73 tons of tires along the highway in Usinsk
