Scientists: symptoms of dementia can be alleviated with special viruses 06/09/2024, 22:48

Viruses modified to replace proteins in the brain may relieve symptoms of frontotemporal dementia. The results of testing the approach on mice were published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Frontotemporal dementia is an incurable disease that causes memory, speech and personality problems. In 5-12% of cases, the disease develops due to loss of progranulin protein. In this case, accumulation of insoluble toxic proteins occurs.

In the new study, scientists used viruses to transfer the gene encoding the progranulin protein into the brains of mice. The therapy significantly reduced the accumulation of toxic proteins and alleviated symptoms of dementia in mice.

Before that scientists I learnedIt is stated that intense exercise performed at least once a week can reduce the risk of developing dementia in hypertensive patients. The protective effect of activity was greatest in people under 75 years of age.

Previous scientists to create 12 unique patients with asymptomatic Alzheimer’s disease.
