Feeding peanuts to children from infancy to age five can reduce the risk of peanut allergy by 81%. This has been shown by a study published in the journal. NEJM Evidence.
In the experiment, half of the children regularly consumed peanut products from infancy until the age of five, while the other half avoided peanuts during this period. Early inclusion of peanut products in the diet reduced the risk of peanut allergy by 81% at age five.
Children then avoided peanut products between ages 5 and 6. Despite this, the risk of allergy remained low.
Of the participants who avoided peanuts, 15.4% (38 of 246 children) and 4.4% of those who consumed peanuts in childhood (11 of 251 children) developed a peanut allergy by age 12.
A safe and simple strategy to include peanuts in children’s diets, if implemented widely, could prevent tens of thousands of allergy cases in the United States. Scientists recommended consulting a pediatrician before making any dietary changes.
