Nightmares may be a symptom of the autoimmune disease systemic lupus erythematosus. This was reported by daily mail.
In lupus, the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. This can lead to rashes, muscle and joint pain, and severe fatigue. Periods of exacerbation may last for weeks or longer.
In the new study, researchers analyzed data from 700 people. Nightmares were one of the most common symptoms reported by patients. Moreover, in 30% of cases, lupus started one year before diagnosis and was often accompanied by flares. Patients dreamed that they were being attacked, crushed, trapped, or having their skin ripped off.
A quarter of patients reported hallucinations. To them, these were similar to Alice’s journey in Wonderland and were accompanied by a feeling of disorientation.
The study authors noted that the frequency of hallucinations and nightmares in people with lupus was previously unknown. For this reason, many lupus patients are misdiagnosed with mental disorders. They believe these symptoms are related to an immune attack on brain tissue.
