In terms of parameters and weight, the Stupor is comparable to an automatic weapon; carried like a regular assault rifle for added convenience. The total length of the system is 1.16 m, the weight in the working position is 5.5 kg, it works up to 4 hours on a single charge. The complex looks like a device with a plastic case of complex shape and can be equipped with two sights at once – a collimator or optics, which is necessary for detecting unmanned vehicles at a distance inaccessible to the naked eye.
The complex has a built-in suppression unit that, within a radius of two to five kilometers, can jam the signals of almost any existing satellite navigation systems, such as the American GPS, the Chinese BeiDou, the European Galileo and the Russian GLONASS. It is also capable of blocking the signals of mobile networks of various standards such as GSM, 3G and LTE at a distance of up to one kilometer. Interference can be generated at frequencies of 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz, and 5.2-5.8 GHz.
Stupor was first recognized when it was shown at the Army-2017 international military-technical forum. While the Russian Ministry of Defense has shown interest in compact electromagnetic weapons, the head of the defense department, Sergei Shoigu, said that in order to enter service, they must be tested, including in real hostilities in Syria. Details of the tests were not officially announced.
“The principle of operation of the new weapon is based on the use of microwave radiation, which is almost the same as the “microwave”.
Such a microwave provides a directed microwave pulse that can damage the aircraft’s electronics. Provided that the object itself is in the field of view, this is not always possible due to the height of its hovering and rather small dimensions. In this region, the UAV receives an electromagnetic pulse that cuts off communication with it and impairs controllability.
After that, it either crashes or makes an emergency landing, ”says military expert, MVNE Bauman Anatoly Makhnenko, associate professor at the Moscow State Technical University at the Faculty of Robotics and Integrated Automation.
The specialist added that powerful electronic warfare vehicles (EW) such as Krasukha-4, Leer-3, Moskva-1 “hit” for hundreds of kilometers (Moskva-1 controls airspace for 400 km) and at the same time disables them. The electronics of both aircraft and ground systems, including artillery and rocket launchers, deprive them of targeted fire. However, Makhnenko believes that such tools are difficult and impractical to use against small drones.
“The Ukrainian Armed Forces makes extremely intensive use of small-sized unmanned aerial vehicles, which perform the functions of aerial reconnaissance and fire adjustment. You can buy them in the store and install a video camera with a transmitting signal, or, for example, hang a grenade and turn it into a “kamikaze”. The sky is already full of drones. An officer of the DPR army with the call sign “Shaman” is difficult for many to identify,” said in an interview with socialbites.ca.
It is economically very expensive to use standard air defense and missile defense systems against them.
“Fighting such drones is quite difficult. Air defense systems, of course, detect and track them, but launching a missile at a visual reconnaissance aircraft is at least wasteful. Even the ZSU-23-4 “Shilka” does not make sense to drive in the field after drones. Sparrows The purpose of the new development is to paralyze the actions of small enemy air assets, for which it is a pity to spend missiles and shells, ”the military expert, reserve colonel Vladimir Popov told socialbites.ca.
