You need to have two different tests to determine the bacteria that cause gastritis. In this respect “To Doctor Peter” said Oleg Polyglottov, head of the endoscopic department of the ABIA clinic.
For a long time, it was believed that gastritis and ulcers were caused by unhealthy diet, stress, medications and smoking. It turned out that the real cause is the action of the Helicobacter pylori bacteria (Helicobacter pylori). Toxic waste products destroy the gastric mucosa. However, Helicobacter is not easy to identify; Gastroenterologists often insist on performing two tests to confirm the diagnosis.
“One of the simplest and easiest ways to identify Helicobacter pylori is with a rapid test performed during gastroscopy (examination of the stomach with an endoscope). If Helicobacter is detected, the endoscopist sends the person to a gastroenterologist to prescribe individual treatment. Once the patient has been treated, the risk of re-infection is much lower than the first time, since there are already antibodies in the blood,” explained Polyglottov.
Other tests include a stool test for Helicobacter pylori antigen, a urease breath test, and a blood test for Helicobacter pylori antibodies.
