A plant called Mammoth (“Mammoth”), created by the Swiss company Climeworks, has become operational in Iceland. As the publication writes FerraThis facility, which focuses on removing carbon dioxide (CO2) directly from the atmosphere, is considered the largest facility in the world using this technology.
Mammoth represents a significant improvement over Climeworks’ previous project, Orca, which opened in 2021 and was ten times smaller. The new facility has a modular structure that accommodates 72 collectors that work like giant atmospheric vacuum cleaners. Currently, 12 collectors are operating and many more collectors are planned to become operational in the coming months.
At full capacity, Mammoth is expected to be capable of removing 36,000 tonnes of CO2 annually; This is equivalent to the emissions of approximately 8,000 gas-powered cars per year. The carbon captured by the facility will then be transported underground for long-term storage in natural rock formations.
