Scientists from Anglia Ruskin University found that low- and moderate-intensity exercise reduces the risk of depression more effectively than vigorous exercise. Research results published In the journal Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews (NBR).
The study by British scientists is a meta-analysis of previously published scientific studies on the effect of physical activity on the severity of depressive disorder, psychosis and schizophrenia. Scientists tried to find out which type of physical activity (intense strength and aerobic training, gardening, golf, walking, running, jogging) is most helpful in improving mental health.
The results showed that low- to moderate-intensity exercise (not requiring high energy expenditure, high heart rate, or sweating) reduced the risk of developing or worsening symptoms of depression by 23% and anxiety by 26%. However, high-intensity training did not show a similar therapeutic and preventive effect.
Moderate to light physical activity was also significantly associated with a 27% reduction in the likelihood of developing serious mental disorders such as psychosis and schizophrenia.
