A new fraud scheme regarding the change of compulsory health insurance policies has been discovered in Russia. In this respect RIA News SafeTech CEO Denis Kalemberg said:
Scammers posing as insurers are convincing citizens to download an application that claims to belong to the Ministry of Health. This application is actually a device remote access and fund theft program.
The expert noted that mobile operators’ fraudulent schemes, such as calls regarding contract termination, have been known for a long time and have been reported in the media. But cases of changing compulsory health insurance policies are less suspicious, since not all citizens are aware of frequent changes in the form of policies and their validity period.
Kalemberg warned that the app, presented under the guise of the Ministry of Health, actually allows hackers to remotely access the victim’s device, including access to mobile banking to withdraw money.
Also, under the guise of this application, you can download a banking Trojan to your smartphone, which hijacks SMS codes and allows you to withdraw money from your mobile bank.
According to the head of SafeTech, cases using this new scheme have currently been recorded in Primorye, but there is a possibility of expansion to other regions, as it is effective and well thought out.
