The arrival of fine weather attracts tourists to stay outdoors and in the middle of nature. The rise in prices and the rapid increase in inflation did not stop the desire to travel and take a few days off before the long-awaited summer vacation. Many have chosen May to do the Camino de Santiago or have fun with family, spouse or friends at a campground, country house, touristic apartment or, in the case of pilgrims, a hostel. Last May there was a strong increase in demand for non-hotel establishments in Galicia: a total of 162,678 travelers booked campsites, apartments, country houses or hostels. An average of 5,500 tourists stay in such establishments in the society every day. This balance multiplies the records for the same period of 2021 by six, still marked by the uncertainty created by the pandemic.
According to data released yesterday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the volume of overnight stays in such establishments reached 240,354, largely thanks to the withdrawal of hostels.
Specifically, there are only 4,800 left in 2021, which means demand multiplied by 24. Tourists staying in hostels had 140,423 overnight stays, multiplying the previous year’s figure by almost 25, and determined Galician as the region with the most bookings for this type of accommodation.
The campgrounds welcomed 9,687 travelers last May, recorded 32,530 overnight stays, 73.5% more than a year ago, and tripled last year.
Tourist apartments also doubled their visitors to 36,164 overnight stays, 76.4% more, up to 15,421 people. Additionally, 22,659 travelers (+161) and 31,237 overnight stays (+146) were registered in rural tourism homes.
