Scientists at Ohio State University found that eating a high-fat meal a few days before surgery triggered inflammation in the brain and significantly reduced cognitive performance in rats. Research results published In the journal Brain, Behavior and Immunity (BBI).
During the experiment, old and young rodents were divided into two groups. The first group followed a high-fat diet for three days, while the second group served as a control and followed a normal diet. Following the dietary intervention period, rodents in the first group underwent a form of experimental abdominal surgery. Animals in the second group were anesthetized.
The experiment showed that eating fatty foods in the days before surgery caused a significant decrease in cognitive performance in rats. Scientists found that long-term and contextual memory impairments were associated with the initiation of the inflammatory process in the brain of rodents in the postoperative period.
The surgery itself puts a lot of stress on the body, the researchers explained. When combined with poor nutrition, these interventions stimulate the activity of an immune system receptor called TLR4, which produces inflammatory effects.
