Scientists at Michigan State University’s Institute for Social Research found that couples who are consistent in their drinking behavior (both drink) tend to live longer together. Research results published At Gerontologist.
In the study, researchers analyzed the relationship duration and drinking habits of 4,656 heterosexual couples aged 50 and over. The researchers found that couples who both reported drinking alcohol together in the past three months (before the survey) stayed together the longest. Similar results were not observed for nonsmokers or nonsmokers.
Scientists emphasized that the study results should not be interpreted as a recommendation to consume more alcohol to strengthen relationships or marriage. They noted that excessive drinking can lead to addiction and a number of serious health problems.
