Ultrasound is not very informative when examining air-containing organs. About this portal “Doctor Peter” said Natalya Nosenko, ultrasound diagnostician and head of the center for ultrasound and functional research methods at the Federal Scientific and Clinical Center of the Federal Agency for Medicine and Biology of Russia.
Using ultrasound, you can evaluate the structure of organs and blood flow in them: liver, kidneys, joints, heart, blood vessels, thyroid gland and others. However, ultrasound has physical obstacles.
“Therefore, we cannot evaluate bone structures at the moment,” says the ultrasound specialist. “Examination of organs protected from the doctor by skeletal bones or metal structures, the brain, as well as air-containing structures (stomach, intestines and lungs) is also limited.”
The doctor added that the biological effects of medical ultrasound have been well studied and there is no evidence of harm. However, there are limitations when performing ultrasound of the eyes and the fetus that doctors and equipment manufacturers are aware of.
“The programs used do not allow us to violate the rules for conducting these studies. But in other cases, the number and duration of daily or annual ultrasounds are not limited,” Nosenko added.
