Experts from Action on Salt, a research organization at Queen Mary University of London, found that vegan cheese may contain more salt than potato chips. Eating too much of these foods can increase your blood pressure. In this respect reports Daily Mail edition.
Due to the spread of veganism as an ethical position that implies non-participation in senseless violence against animals, the food industry market has been flooded with new types of products. Vegan alternatives to animal products rely on plant protein from soy, peas and wheat.
It is noted that vegan products are sometimes perceived as “healthier” by consumers. In reality, this view may be wrong. According to a report by Action on Salt, some vegan cheeses contain more salt than animal cheeses.
Vegan cheese was found to be one of the saltiest cheeses on the market, with an average of 2.5 grams of salt per 100 grams of product. This amount is almost half of the recommended daily salt intake for an adult (adults are recommended to consume no more than 6 grams of salt per day).
Researchers estimate that a 30-gram serving of vegan Cheddar cheese may contain more salt than an equivalent serving of potato chips. It is stated that consuming too much salt can lead to high blood pressure, which can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.
