The oldest red lipstick ever found was discovered in Iran, dating back 3,600 years. This was reported by Arkeonews.
Archaeologists discovered a small vial of the mineral chlorite in the Jiroft region of southeastern Iran. It contained a dark red dye believed to act as lipstick.
The shape of the bottle, reminiscent of modern lipstick tubes, suggests that it could be held with one hand while holding a mirror with the other.
Lipstick ingredients include hematite minerals thickened with manganite and braunite, as well as traces of galena and anglesite. They were mixed with vegetable wax and other organic ingredients, much like modern lipstick recipes.
The discovery provides valuable information about the ancient Marhashi civilization mentioned in Mesopotamian cuneiform texts. The complexity of the make-up technique shows that Iran is a society with a clear social hierarchy and aesthetic standards. It is known that foundation, eye shadow and eyeliner were also used in ancient Iran.
