It surprisingly made the shortlist of Oscar nominees for best international film. This is a German production that revives the trend taken up by the most progressive North American cinema, of stories set in a school environment and showing a wide range of conflicts: class, racial, ethical, sexual… In this case, director İlker Çatak shows how the group’s perception of individuality can change.
Our hero is a young teacher who is respected by classmates and students. One day, he records on video how he steals the wallet of another employee at the institute. Is it legal to do this? Because what was an absolute certainty for her suddenly turns into a labyrinthine nightmare: She is reported for invasion of privacy because she left her laptop video camera on to record the other woman’s actions. Everything gets complicated because the defendant’s son is also his student, and a complete drama ensues. Although well told and acted, the film has a certain telemovie feel to it; This correction sometimes runs counter to the tension the story provides. Of course, since everything happened at school, it is an interesting detail that we do not know anything about the private lives of the characters.
