Doctors warn about dangers of omega-3 supplements Daily Mail: High doses of omega-3 supplements increase risk of arrhythmia 17:01

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has warned about the dangers of dietary supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids: studies show they are linked to an increased risk of arrhythmia, i.e. irregular heartbeat. This was reported by daily mail.

High levels of fat in the blood increase the risk of stroke and heart attack. According to some scientific data, supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids can reduce fat concentration. However, the EMA warns that recent research shows that ethyl esters of omega-3 fatty acids may increase the risk of developing atrial fibrillation, in which the heartbeat becomes irregular and rapid. This condition significantly increases the risk of stroke and heart attack.

The risk of atrial fibrillation is highest in patients taking four grams of omega-3s per day, the EMA said. Most over-the-counter medications contain smaller doses, so patients taking them do not need to worry about serious side effects. However, the agency said that manufacturers of supplements with high omega-3 content should indicate the risk of arrhythmia on their labels.
