In some cases, it is possible to reduce cholesterol to a safe level with diet alone, without using medication. Cardiologist Vadim Zakiev, teacher of the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Russian State University of Social Sciences, told socialbites.ca.
“Doctors currently have a wide range of drug treatments in their arsenal: statins, Ezetimibe, PCSK9 inhibitors and inclisiran. However, drug therapy is always added to the diet. In some patients, it may be possible to control it with dietary changes alone. The Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet are the biggest “have an evidence base. Both imply the maximum rejection of animal fats, that is, lard, butter, sausage, pork and fatty dairy products. You should include vegetables, fruits, nuts, vegetable oil, primarily olive oil and fatty fish in your diet,” said Zakiev.
Along with diet, exercise also helps lower cholesterol. But with significantly increased cholesterol, it may be impossible to maintain a healthy lifestyle and medication may still be needed. Diet and therapy complement each other but are not interchangeable.
