El Hematocritico posthumous victory: Cines Yelmo fined for not allowing outside purchase of popcorn

“Wherever Miguel is, he’ll be eating a bag of popcorn that wasn’t purchased at Cines Yelmo, and he’ll be here watching the movie.” These are the words of Ledicia Costas, a Galician writer and widow of the writer from A Coruña. Miguel Angel LopezThe man better known as El Hematocritico, who died suddenly last week.

The sudden and unexpected loss of Hemocrítico shocked the cultural world and social networks in Spain, where Miguel was known through his Twitter account. And the reason for the popcorn incident was that Miguel was the protagonist of an anecdote that went viral last summer and which we told in El Periódico de España from the group Prensa Ibérica. “Popcorn smuggling in Galicia.” It is a surreal situation that happened at the Yelmo Cinemas in Vigo on July 12, and which the protagonist tells this newspaper firsthand.

That afternoon, Miguel went to see the movie with a group of 13 children and adults (including Ledicia). “Ruby, The Adventures of a Young Kraken”. And what promised to be a peaceful afternoon filled with family movies turned into a disturbing scene involving threats and the police.

This was because Miguel and some of his friends were carrying bags of popcorn that they had purchased from outside the movie theater building. Speaking before the episode, Miguel said: “Popcorn prices in the cinema are through the roof and can be between 6 and 9 euros.” He had previously addressed the issue of the high cost of snacks in the cinema on his social networks. However, Yelmo does not allow entry to food and beverages purchased from other businesses.

“You keep them secret.”

On July 12, Miguel took a gamble. Before entering the session, he purchased several bags of popcorn from another store. And after entering the room, the problems started. A security guard pointed to his backpack and told him he hid some popcorn. “They are not hidden, I carry them in my backpack”Miguel replied, looking directly into your eyes.

However, the security guard specially hired to ensure that the public did not bring food purchased from other establishments into the room stood up. And it ended between him and the theater manager threatening to call the police if they didn’t give him the popcorn.

“It was a violent scene. Because of the figures, because there were children, because the trailers had already started… and Miguel perceived it as an attack. Because there was such a thing,” Ledicia recalled for El Periódico de España. “It was an attack that we couldn’t understand. . Look, I’m a writer, but I worked at Cines Yelmo when I was young. The manager who said we couldn’t put the popcorn was my colleague at the time.”

There aren’t even trailers

“I really wanted to see the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trailer, but I missed it with this episode,” Miguel joked later in a phone interview with El Periódico de España, because they eventually forced him to submit. stash Popcorn if he wants to stay in the room.

Miguel left us a week ago. And by a twist of fate, this Monday a sanction against Cines Yelmo was made public: Basque Consumer Institute (Kontsumobide) fined the company 30,001 euros for not allowing customers to enter with food and drinks purchased off-site. No matter how many security guards they place, they will no longer be able to prevent access to such products purchased from outside.

“There was news from the Basque Country, but I I hope it will be in Yelmo de Galicia soon. And I think it’s such poetic justice that it’s happening right now,” says Ledicia, recalling how the other group of friends who accompanied them to the movie session joked with them and told them, “every time we go somewhere with you,” Ledicia says, “Things like that happen to us, too.”

Farewell awaited

“It’s been a week and a day since he left, and I haven’t been able to respond to even a tenth of the people who contacted me to express their condolences,” Ledicia said. Because he was a very loved person in every field. “It covered so many aspects, so many people loved it, that it seems impossible to answer everyone.”

“It seems impossible to answer everyone.”Writer, comedian and tweeter Miguel, who is addicted to all the accounts he opened, was a kind of Renaissance man in our age: “I was talking about him with a friend today and he said the following to me. Miguel was like Leonardo Da Vinci. because of the many things he did,” his wife explains.

And so he won’t be doing a typical farewell either. “I don’t think he deserves a traditional farewell with a funeral home and flowers. We must say goodbye to the hematocritic style. “I still can’t give you any more details, but he’ll get it,” his widow tells us. Meanwhile, wherever Miguel is, he’ll be eating some popcorn (not purchased at Cines Yelmo) and watching poetic justice being done in the smuggling case that’s gone viral .And time proved him right.
