Scientists from the University of Queensland in Australia found that exacerbations of asthma in children may be caused by the stress experienced by parents due to financial difficulties. Research results published At Wiley Online Library.
Asthma is a periodic narrowing of the airways accompanied by bronchial hyperreactivity, cough, shortness of breath and suffocation attacks. About half of all cases are diagnosed in children under 10 years of age.
To examine the relationship between psychosocial factors, such as family relationships, and an increased risk of asthma exacerbations, researchers conducted a study of 3,900 families with children. The scientists collected information about the subjects’ health conditions, recorded the age at which children’s asthma symptoms first appeared, and assessed the intensity of the symptoms. Researchers also revealed how often children encounter stressful situations throughout their lives.
The results showed that children whose mothers were prone to depression were 55% more likely to develop asthma and asthma complications. It has also been found that parental stress resulting from financial difficulties can trigger the onset of this disease in children.
The study authors hope their study will raise awareness that stress causes damage to children’s bodies comparable to the effects of environmental pollution (air pollution). The researchers concluded that more research is needed to create practical solutions for coping with parenting stress, financial difficulties, and depression.
