The experimental drug Retatrutide helped obese patients lose weight and reduced the amount of fat in the liver. The work is available at: meeting American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD).
The scientists’ previous study, published in June 2023, showed that Retatrutide allowed obese people to lose about a quarter of their original weight in 11 months. Now, data from some participants in this study have shown that the drug can also alleviate fatty liver disease, which is the buildup of large amounts of fat in and around the liver. This condition is a common side effect of obesity. About 70% of people with type 2 diabetes also have fatty liver disease.
Researchers used data from 98 obese adults who took either high or low doses of medication. At the end of the study, it was observed that the amount of liver fat in the patients decreased by an average of 81-86%. By week 48, 93% of patients taking the higher dose had lost enough liver fat for their levels to fall below 5%, meaning they were free of fatty liver disease.
