Every year since 1977, the largest strength athletics competition on the planet, ‘The World’s Strongest Man’, has been held. Incredible records were set in it, such as deadlifting 501 kilos or squatting 440 kilos. However, these feats are minor compared to those performed by other creatures; some are as small and seemingly fragile as ants or beetles. Which ones the strongest animals in the world?
Answering this question is an impossible task; There are many types of forces, among other causes. What is certain is that species with true “superpowers” exist. Here we list some of them in alphabetical order.
harpy eagle
It is considered the strongest bird in the world. It is about one meter long, has a wingspan of up to 2 meters and weighs between 4 and 9 kilos (females are larger). It is capable of loading, flying and moving hundreds of meters of prey weighing up to 15 kilos. The strength of its claws is much greater than that of a Rottweiler’s jaw.
green anaconda
It is the heaviest and strongest snake in the world. His body consists of pure muscles. Females, which are much larger than males, stand between 5 and 8 meters tall and can weigh up to 85 kilos. When attacking, they wrap their bodies around the prey and cling to it until it dies from constriction or suffocation. They then swallow it whole. They can eat enormous prey.
Shot
Cargo breeds such as the Shire (the largest on the planet), Belgian Draft or Clydesdale are capable of carrying and dragging heavy loads. They are very tall, in some cases over 1.8 meters tall, and have large muscle masses, meaning some specimens weigh more than a tonne. The strongest horses can drag more than 2000 kilos.
Nile crocodile
It is the strongest reptile and largest crocodile in existence. Its jaw is the strongest in the animal kingdom because, according to some studies, it can exert a force of 270 pounds per square centimeter, which is 27 times stronger than that of an adult human. However, Tyrannosaurus rex, which had the capacity to crush a car with its jaws, is far from its ancestor.
Elephant
Its skeleton accounts for almost 20% of its weight; This is twice that of most mammals, which explains its robustness. It is the largest land animal in existence: It is about 4 meters tall and can weigh more than 6,000 kilograms. With its body consisting of approximately 40,000 muscles, it can uproot a tree or lift a load of more than 300 kilograms. It can drag 70,000 kilos.
scarab
There are more than a hundred species in the world, and many of them stand out for their incredible strength. It measures between 1.8 and 2 centimeters on average and can weigh up to 10 grams. A scientific study conducted in 2010 showed that it could lift up to 1,141 times its own weight. To equal this figure, one person would have to carry 80,000 kilos, the equivalent of six buses.
Gorilla
Although its average height is 1.7 meters and its weight is around 170 kilos, there are also specimens that are over 2 meters tall and weigh over 200 kilos. These close relatives of humans boast Herculean strength: They can lift 1,000 kilograms and punch with more than 450 kilograms of force, almost five times more than a human.
leaf cutter ant
There are 47 different known species on the planet. The largest can measure 23 millimeters and weigh up to 6 milligrams. Despite their tiny size, they can carry up to 50 times their own weight and travel long distances thanks to their very strong jaws. This is equivalent to a person carrying more than 350 pounds of weight on their back.
giant grouper
Also known as grouper guasa, this creature can even confront sharks. And eat them. Its size is impressive: it can be up to 2.5 meters long, and specimens weighing up to 455 kilograms have been recorded. They can eat almost anything they find in the ocean: crustaceans, lobsters, turtles, octopuses and rays, and even all types of fish, including adult sharks.
grizzly bear
Also known as the gray bear, this bear is large, strong and fast. Its height can reach 2.5 meters and its weight can be more than 600 kilograms. It is the most aggressive plant species, but when calmed down it is estimated to be five times stronger than an adult human male. It has very strong muscles that enable it to lift loads of over 500 kilos. It also has a very strong jaw.
white rhino
It is the second largest land mammal on the planet. It can reach 4.2 meters in length, 1.85 meters in height, and there are examples that weigh up to 4.5 tons. They can throw animals weighing hundreds of kilos into the air, knock down trees, and even overturn one-ton vehicles. And all this without any apparent effort.
Tiger
All tiger subspecies are very powerful, but among them the largest, the Siberian tiger, stands out because its weight can exceed 200 kilograms (there are reports of specimens weighing more than 300 kilograms) and 2 meters in length (head-to-body). These felines can climb trees up to 3 meters and can lift up to 550 kilos with their jaws, more than twice their body weight.
white shark
Although it is not among the largest shark species, it is considered the most powerful due to its strength and aggression. They can grow up to 5 meters long and weigh more than 1,100 kilos. With 300 serrated teeth that are 6 centimeters long, it has a bite that can exert 1,800 pounds of force, three times the strength of a lion. It is considered the largest predator in the world.
