Japanese scientists from Kyoto University have discovered that sperm, algae and some other small creatures can bypass Newton’s third law of motion, which states that the force of action is always equal to the force of reaction. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine PRX Life.
Experts have found that sperm can move in suitable fluids with less effort than it would take according to the laws of physics.
After examining the movement of male germ cells and Chlamydomonas algae under a microscope, researchers discovered that both objects use flagella to move in a special way. They propel themselves through the liquid medium by making wave-like movements with them. At the same time, the environment itself provides less resistance than expected.
Scientists call this phenomenon “peculiar elasticity.” The motor organs bend in response to the resistance of the fluid, reducing the braking effect and thus preserving the owner’s energy.
