India to decommission two Soviet-made warships

The Indian Navy has prepared two Soviet-built warships, INS Nishank and INS Akshay, for decommissioning and decommissioning. By Indian ExpressThe pennant launching ceremony is scheduled for Friday, June 3.

The Veer-class corvette INS Nishank was built in 1989 at the Vympel Shipyard in Rybinsk as part of project 1241 Molniya and remains the last ship of this Soviet-built project in service with the Indian Navy – four more were decommissioned in 2016-2018.

India has built eight such corvettes, one of which sank in a collision in 2006, with the remaining seven corvettes on alert.

Veer-class ships are armed with cruise and anti-ship missiles and can reach speeds of up to 36 knots (67 km/h).

INS Akshay was built in 1990 at the Yaroslavl shipyard according to the project 21412, a small anti-submarine ship. Unlike the corvette, it is armed with an RBU-1200 Uran jet bomber designed to destroy submarines.

Previously reportedAt the Indian shipyard Mazagon Docks in Mumbai, a ceremony was held to simultaneously launch two warships – the destroyer Surat and the frigate Udaigiri. This is reported by the Indian version of Outlook.

Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also attended the ceremony and noted that for the first time in history, two Indian-made ships were launched at the same time.
