The Russian Orthodox Church is examining the episodes of the television program “Sinners in Re-Education” for absurdity and parody, a source from the Russian Orthodox Church told socialbites.ca. He added that the programme’s authors should contact the Church for advice. According to the plot of the show, eight girls, accustomed to living in support, live and work in a convent for a month as a form of repentance, following strict rules.
“We are examining previously aired episodes of this series and will form our position based on the results of the study. A conversation about repentance in the format of a TV program is a very complex story that requires professionalism and deep knowledge. The worst thing that can be done is to integrate such a show into well-known reality shows, from kitchen to politics. The first is how to prepare soup, the second is how to repent in the monastery. There are also successful shows of this genre, for example, “12” on the SPAS TV channel, dedicated to overcoming alcoholism. It is a pity that the creators did not turn to the Russian Church for advice. We always support attempts to talk about Christian repentance in new creative formats, but without cooperation or exchange of experience – such experiments can easily be turned into a comedy and parody,” said a source in the Russian Orthodox Church.
On September 8, the first episode of the reality show “Sinners in Education Again” was broadcast on the “Yu” TV channel. As stated in the project description, 8 girls are kept in an experiment: for a month in a monastery, without a credit card and without communication with the outside world, without branded clothes, manicure and luxury cosmetics. In the project, they will live and work equally with the monastery residents, following strict rules.
