‘Bourbons’: the untold story about a broken family

Once upon a time there was a country that enjoyed the images on the sofa papers. pastoral royal family. Hearing rumors that the media had chosen to keep quiet, a country more Juancarlista than monarchist stood upright when needed, as he lived happily knowing it had a king from Campeche. Sufficient hold on coup military. But the tale of princes and princesses would end with an operetta accelerated by a luxury safari in the midst of an economic crisis that banned the press from telling what it dared not reveal.

Again, There has been no documentary so far. Presenting a true story as well as being “unstructured” (as described in the audiovisual) about this family is unheard of in a long-democratic Spain. journalist Mother Pastor (“Target”, “Nevenka”) and creator of fiction author Gabilondo (‘Patria’, ‘Entrevías’) combined their talents to make up for this shortcoming. The result is a six-part documentaries, ‘The Bourbons’: a royal family’, The premiere of the first episode is this Tuesday, 31 (22.30), Sixth (open) and on the platform digital Atresplayer Premiumwhere will the rest be posted.

“The project was born out of the question of how it was possible that there was no TV series on this topic in Spain,” Pastor appreciates, “there is no better scenario based on real events than that presented by the royal family.” Agrees. Gabilondo: “For a generation that has had to rely on Juan Carlos and take great ambition, it’s time to return the anger of the Transition era. tremendous disappointment. They tried to believe him and he was the monarchy’s Lance Armstrong.” And everything counted with a balanced toneAccording to Gabilondo. “There is a middle ground between fertilization and the guillotine. And we did it,” he assures.

nevertheless they say most real house there was information they didn’t have to tell or watch the content of what they were doing. “We did not receive any complaints or attention to find out what was going on,” Pastor says. Although calls usually arrive the day after the broadcast. A José Antonio Anton, Atresmedia Director of Content is not worried. “The series tackles many issues very honestly and with a lot of rigor, research and documentation behind it,” he says. “He will think one before one after, because being able to talk about anything is an exercise in democracy. I don’t know if there will be calls, but the result is worth it,” he insists.

And this result is a story told by themes, not chronologically. the entire history of the current Bourbonswith continuing parallels grandfather John Charles I King Alfonso XIIIwho also has a productive career land of corruption (he was also a commission agent) and extramarital affairs. The infinity of data provided is confirmed, as Atresmedia TV is a co-production of Exile Content and Pastor’s data agency Newtral, but this highlights their “own view” above all else.

It was Gabilondo who insisted. the story was not chronological. “We wanted to appeal to several generations of this family where we found repetitive behaviors. From a dramatic standpoint, being able to portray Alfonso XIII and Juan Carlos I seemed great to me. We also mixed various eras in all the chapters. It would be more boring if it wasn’t. A Little History Channel” justifies Gabilondo.

And what has not been told so far is mixed with the known events that have been revealed. unreleased images Like her relationship with Franco. “The thing with Bárbara Rey is just one more piece. Allocating more time and resources seemed better to us. Say something about Letizia we don’t know,” warns the proud Pastor. chapter dedicated to this “almost fictional” character“cause you too much empathy: “The mistakes were attributed to Letizia, the mistakes made by the family… But she opened many doors to the institution,” says the Pastor. And he points to a passage: “It is said that for the first time, he went to dinner with his in-laws, who was king, not just anyone. Looks, what was it like that afternoon, after seeing the queen step out onto the balcony and say, ‘I’ve come this far’. I think he deserved it,” says the journalist.

There was no censorship and also they avoided self-censorship. The Main Pastor makes this very clear in the Main Pastor way. “I don’t know how to deal with information any other way. I don’t think the Royal House will like it. I approach everything without complexes and with my head”. Gabilondo admits this self-censorship always flaps its wings: “But trying to please someone is a mistake: ‘hooligans’, fans, politicians…”. According to the creator, they do a public job, and then calls, bad reviews, whatever. “But you have to work. with honesty and without waiting for easy applause. “With fear, this documentary couldn’t have been made,” adds Antón.
