Hungarian scientists from Lorand Eotvos University in Budapest have revealed why people like pugs, bulldogs and other dogs with flat faces more than their sharp-faced relatives. To work published In the scientific journal Scientific Reports.
According to previous research, the popularity of flat-faced dogs has increased worldwide. For example, they have become the most popular breed category in the United States. But sympathy for such pets contradicts logic; Flat-faced dogs have breathing and eye health problems, are at higher risk of heatstroke, and live relatively short lives.
To understand people’s interest in such dogs, researchers compared French and English bulldogs, two flat-faced breeds, with the long-faced Hungarian Mudi Shepherd Dog.
During the experiment, dogs were asked to open a treat box under the supervision of their owners. During the tests, three boxes of varying degrees of complexity were used. Mudi performed 93% better than bulldogs in the test, but bulldogs were 4.5 times more likely than shepherds to seek help from their owners.
Psychologists believe that the helplessness (real or fake) of flat-faced dogs helps them endear themselves to humans, causing the animals to appear like little children to human eyes.
