Scientists from University College London found that meditation, yoga and quality sleep help people with hypertension maintain normal blood pressure. The study was published on: Journal of Hypertension.
There are effective medications for high blood pressure, but it is usually best to make lifestyle changes before starting medications. An international panel of experts from 18 countries has made recommendations on lifestyle changes to control blood pressure, based on the latest clinical and scientific evidence.
Lifestyle factors long known to reduce the risk of developing and progressing hypertension include maintaining a healthy weight, regular physical activity, a healthy diet, limiting salt intake, quitting smoking, and limiting (ideally avoiding) alcohol.
Newer, less obvious factors include mindfulness practices. Experts say research shows that meditation, muscle relaxation, yoga and deep breathing techniques can lower blood pressure. They also said that doctors should examine all aspects of a patient’s sleep, including the duration, quality and timing of sleep, in order to recommend timely measures to improve sleep.
Additionally, studies have revealed that there is a relationship between exposure to air pollution and high blood pressure. People should strive to reduce their exposure to air pollutants, and governments should take action to improve air quality.
