Russia has begun testing a hypersonic sniper cartridge that can reach speeds of more than 1,500 meters per second, Vladislav Lobaev, head of private arms company Lobaev Arms, said. RIA News.
According to him, Lobaev Arms continued development and began testing the conditionally hypersonic cartridge. Speed and accuracy tests of the cartridge are currently being carried out.
Lobaev explained that the cartridge was still considered “conditionally hypersonic” due to the fact that its speed was now at the limit of hypersonic. Hypersound begins at speeds above Mach 5, that is, speeds above 1500 meters per second.
The gunmaker noted that the cartridge can be produced either in a borderline hypersonic version or a directly hypersonic version. This decision will be made based on test results when the mass of the serial product is determined.
Lobaev Arms had previously suspended the hypersonic cartridge project due to the need to increase production of existing weapons under state defense orders. But work on it has resumed, since Ukrainian troops are actively using new 10×100 mm caliber cartridges that can pierce any type of personal protective equipment on the battlefield.
Earlier, Vladislav Lobaev, head of the Russian arms company Lobaev Arms, said that mass production of a completely imported cartridge for high-precision sniper rifles of the 408 Cheytac caliber has begun.
