Risk-free air logistics

they say so the future of logistics inevitably passes through drones, and indeed the dream of the European Union is that these devices can be used regularly for the transport and delivery of packages in 2035 due to the advantages they will bring in terms of fuel savings and sustainability. The activity has been allowed since 31 December 2020, but the reality is that technical constraints prevent it from being implemented, at least significantly. This is where Abionica Solutions, the aviation industry company that is working on and located at the Distrito Digital facilities in Alicante, comes into play. Development of a solution that allows drones to fly safely in urban environments.

The project, in which Abionica Solutions is a part, was funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation with 1.5 million euros through the Center for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI). It is planned to be developed until 2023 in cooperation with the Cantabrian company TTI Norte, the Catalan company Catuav and the Madrid company Temai Ingenieros.

And what is the reality from which it begins? Antonio Bedmar, director of the firm from Alicante, emphasizes that “everyone is betting on package transport with drones. about build roads in the airto shape an activity with a future and enormous potential. The problem is, it’s a market that currently doesn’t have mature products as they come from model airplanes and are not safe due to low quality components.

The real challenge, according to Bedmar, is that drones “have no eyes”. Therefore, the aim of the project we are working on is, be able to detect obstacles that may appear around them and also design alternative routes. In this way, we will reduce the risk of collision as much as possible.”

The president of Abionica Solutions gives the example of manned aircraft. “Those who pilot them – he emphasizes – are trained to see and avoid other ships, but when it comes to drones, the problem is that there is currently no technology to do the same for them. Radar can be used, but it’s often too big for small-sized devices.”

The solution worked on is algorithmic, “but -Bedmar always proves it works”. That’s about it, he adds, to develop a system under aviation standards so that drones can fly in urban environments or above people alike, without the risk of accident. They would also have to live near airports, by planes. «It’s the step from a toy to something seriousSo that the authority is satisfied with the results, and unmanned logistics become a reality for all purposes with drones,” he emphasizes.

At the moment 45 cities considering allowing air parcel shipments before 2030Valencia included, but they expect the technology to be sufficiently developed. “I hope your future in Alicante will undoubtedly join this initiative,” said Antonio Bedmar.

The manager is the pillar on which Abionica Solutions stands, due to her extensive experience in the aviation and drone industry. After the pandemic subsided, they quadrupled their turnover in 2021 and doubled their workforce to 14 existing people. This exercise will include four more.
