The document is part of a broader US Department of Defense strategy that protects the military from the future effects of extreme weather and seeks to mitigate some of the Pentagon’s environmental impacts.

“The Navy is at the heart of the climate crisis and this is really affecting our preparation in the Navy and Marine Corps. We are taking great strides in trying to come to terms with that,” Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro told the House Appropriations Protection Subcommittee.

Del Toro noted that Albany Marine Logistics Base became the first zero-energy military base in May 2022, that is, it receives energy from renewable sources as well as fossil fuels.

The strategy includes several objectives, including reducing the Navy’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and the Navy’s ability to operate in a changing climate.
