Scientists from the Medical University of Lodz (Poland) have found that fewer steps are needed than previously thought to reduce the risk of death from any cause. Research results published In the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology (Eurjpc).
The authors conducted a meta-analysis of 17 scientific articles involving more than 200,000 people. Previously, it was believed that to maintain health, you need to take 8-10 thousand steps a day. However, regardless of the cause, the risk of developing dangerous health problems decreases with every 500-1000 steps. Thus, an increase in the average number of steps by 1000 is associated with a 15% reduction in risk, and 500 steps – with a 7% decrease.
Scientists called 3967 the minimum number of steps per day – this number, which reduces the likelihood of death from all causes, and 2337 steps per day from cardiovascular diseases. At the same time, it was not possible to determine the maximum number of useful steps: up to 20 thousand steps, scientists noted only beneficial effects for the body.
