Trial results of the drug Zibesiran have shown that a single injection can lower high blood pressure in hypertensive patients for up to six months. The research was published in the journal NEJM.
Hypertension occurs in about 40% of men and women and requires a daily pill. More than half of patients with high blood pressure do not take all of their prescribed medication, resulting in irregular blood pressure control and an increased risk of stroke, heart attack and dementia. Zilebesiran, a drug developed by the American company Alnylam, is administered by injection.
An international team of scientists conducted early clinical trials of the drug at four UK centers. The study included 107 patients with hypertension: 80 received a single subcutaneous injection of zilebesiran and 32 received a placebo with no active ingredient.
The analysis showed a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure lasting up to six months in patients treated with the current drug. On average, systolic blood pressure decreased by more than 10 mm Hg. Art. At a dose of 200 mg and more than 20 mm Hg. Art. at a maximum dose of 800 mg.
The drug works by preventing the production of angiotensin, a hormone that constricts blood vessels and causes high blood pressure.
