Former Peruvian Prime Minister arrested for the Castillo coup

Peruvian Police (PNP) arrested the former prime minister on Tuesday Betsy Chavez At his home in the southern city of Tacna after the Supreme Court order her “immediate capture”after announcing that he had filed an appeal by the prosecutor’s office for a precautionary detention order for 18 months.

Chavez left his home in police custody and was transferred to the Judicial Prison in the town of Tacna, on the border with Chile, where his rights would be read and he would undergo a legal medical examination. Police colonel Ramón Ramos told reporters he was taken to Lima or detained there.

The police chief added that Chavez did not resist arrest, “always” cooperated with agents and said goodbye to his family before being handcuffed.

The Permanent Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court, chaired by Judge César San Martín, asked the Judicial Police on Monday to apprehend Chavez, after announcing his petition against Chavez for alleged involvement in the failed coup attempt. then president Pedro Castillo (2021-2022), on 7 December.

Just one hour after this information was made public, Chávez announced that he was “calm” in a live broadcast from his Tik Tok account. He stated that he was waiting for the police at his home and that he was not alone “if he wasn’t with millions of people”.

He added that the court decision had not yet been communicated to him, but reiterated: he would stay at his home in Tacna, the city where he requested preventive detentionbecause it has “all its roots” there.

As the agents came to the house, journalists who went to the scene reported that people around Chávez had stolen and damaged their equipment.

The prosecution, for its part, posted on its Twitter account that it “succeeded in declaring that the appeal was justified and that the Judiciary had ordered 18 months of preventive detention against Betssy Chávez, against whom an investigation was launched.” The alleged crime of rioting and alternatively conspiracy to the detriment of the state“.

The High Chamber refused to apply the same measure to former ministers in its decision this Tuesday Willy Huerta and Roberto Sánchez are also under investigation for alleged participation in the failed Castillo coup.

In this sense, the Public Ministry has confirmed that Sánchez and Huerta will continue their appearance measure with restrictions.

On April 26, the supreme pre-trial investigation judge Juan Carlos Checkley had refused to take preventive detention against the three former ministers, despite ordering them to appear and to pay a bail of 80,000 soles to 100,000 soles ($27,700 or 25,316 euros) against Chávez. 50,000 bases against former Interior Minister Huerta and former Head of Commerce Sánchez.
