Solar and wind power supplied 40% of Spain’s energy in April

For the first time in its history, Spain covered 40 percent of its electricity production with wind and solar energy in April 2022.The previous monthly record for the country as a whole was a year earlier, in May 2021, when 38.9 percent of its electricity was generated from these two energies, according to an analysis by global energy experts group Ember.

Ember reflects in her report that over the past two years, wind and solar have reduced the share of fossil fuels in Spain’s energy basket by eight percentage points.

This is Ember’s third annual global electricity report examining changes in the global electricity transition over the past year. The study analyzes energy production and import data from 209 countries between 2000 and 2020 and includes 2021 data from 75 countries that account for 93 percent of global electricity demand.

The trend reflects a global “acceleration” for wind and solar power, which has doubled since 2015. To supply one-tenth of the world’s electricity by 2021, according to Ember’s ‘Global Electricity Review’ report.

Thus adding that Wind and solar were the fastest growing forms of electricity worldwide for the 17th consecutive year in 2021. and analysts predict they will be the ‘backbone’ of the future electrical system.

The study now explains that Many European countries, including Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom, will generate more than a quarter of their electricity from wind and solar by 2021It helps to quickly reduce its dependence on fossil fuels imported from Russia and other countries.

In this context, the International Energy Agency, To achieve the net zero carbon emissions target, wind and solar power must reach 20 percent of the world’s electricity by 2025 and 70 percent by 2050.

In this way, Charles Moore, director of the European Ember program, stressed that wind and solar power were breaking records around the world, adding that he was convinced they should be used “lightning fast” this decade. «The process to reshape the current energy system has already begun. Wind and solar offer a solution to the ‘triad’ of providing a sustainable, affordable and secure energy supply,” he concludes.
