For the first time in its history, Spain covered 40 percent of its electricity production with wind and solar energy in April 2022.The previous monthly record for the country as a whole was a year earlier, in May 2021, when 38.9 percent of its electricity was generated from these two energies, according to an analysis by global energy experts group Ember.
Ember reflects in her report that over the past two years, wind and solar have reduced the share of fossil fuels in Spain’s energy basket by eight percentage points.
This is Ember’s third annual global electricity report examining changes in the global electricity transition over the past year. The study analyzes energy production and import data from 209 countries between 2000 and 2020 and includes 2021 data from 75 countries that account for 93 percent of global electricity demand.
The trend reflects a global “acceleration” for wind and solar power, which has doubled since 2015. To supply one-tenth of the world’s electricity by 2021, according to Ember’s ‘Global Electricity Review’ report.
