family tragedy
About two years before the tragedy, 50-year-old Lidia Shiryaeva moved with her family to Alexandrovka (a village of 250 inhabitants). Lydia lived with her husband, disabled brother, 23-year-old daughter with severe cerebral palsy, son and three children. The children’s mother did not live with them – as local residents say, she went to work in Moscow and, in fact, did not participate in upbringing.
As the media wrote, the family itself was judged positively: Lydia’s husband and son earned good money at a factory in Marks, near Saratov. The woman herself took care of the household and the grandchildren. The children regularly attended kindergarten and school, looked neat and studied well. No one in the family was accused of using alcohol either.
A few months before the murder, in October 2021, Shiryaeva’s husband had an accident and suffered a serious head injury. Doctors could not help him, the man died a month later. According to the relatives of the Shiryaevs, Lydia was very upset by the death of her husband, and it was the depression that could push her to commit crimes.
He helped the whole village
On December 11, 2021, the 23-year-old disabled daughter of Lidia Shiryaeva, along with her three grandchildren, two boys and a girl, felt bad after dinner. The woman herself called 112 and reported that she had nausea and vomiting in her relative. Two small children died before the ambulance arrived. The rest died in hospital on December 13 and 14, she said.
Villagers and the media, in their own words, described the incident as “a domestic emergency” and believed that the dead had eaten something wrong. Law enforcement worked on versions of carbon monoxide poisoning or insecticide – a week before the tragedy, the house was treated from cockroaches and bedbugs.
However, investigators almost did not immediately believe that Lidia Shiryaeva and her son survived thanks to prudence. Moreover, the woman was alone at home with those who lost their lives during the incident. And they began to unravel the version of relatives involved in the deaths. As Komsomolskaya Pravda wrote, during the interrogations, Shiryaeva denied her attitude to what was happening. As a result, the investigation released the woman and her son without finding any direct evidence of their guilt.
The whole village helped with the burial of Shiryaeva’s daughter and grandchildren, support was also provided at the factory where her son worked. Initially, a criminal case was opened under Part 3 of Art. 109 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (causing death as a result of the negligence of two or more persons), but later reclassified in paragraphs “a”, “c” of part 2 of Art. 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (the murder of two or more persons, minors or other persons in a clearly desperate situation for the perpetrator) – The Investigative Committee continued the investigation.
unfortunate noodles
In the summer of 2022, under the pressure of the evidence collected by investigators, Lidia Shiryaeva wrote a confession: it was she who poisoned her own daughter and grandchildren.
“I started making dinner on December 11, asking my grandchildren what they wanted. They said noodles in milk. I added salt to taste, let it cool. While everyone was distracted, I went out and brought a bag of poison. I knew there was poison in the glove compartment of my husband’s car. Add to the soup and mix. Later, he made his grandchildren and daughter eat this soup,” the accused said.
The woman cautiously poured out the remnants of the poisoned milk soup so that her son would not accidentally eat it. She then fed him and his brother “clean” noodles. When his family got sick, he went to the hospital with them. The media later wrote that he mourned the death for more than six months.
Shiryaeva explained that during the interrogations she was tired of the burden of caring for and caring for her sick daughter and three grandchildren. The burden became unbearable for him, as the son, the father of the children, spent almost all his time at work and their mother had actually fled. The recent death of her husband also affected. Therefore, the woman decided to kill.
A medical examination found that Shiryaeva was sane. At the same time, his son still refuses to admit that his mother may have decided to poison him: he does not exclude that he could be persuaded to kill four members of his own family.
