With age, the function of the organs of the immune system is lost, so many patients are prescribed immunomodulators. However, according to the director of the Institute for the Study of Aging of the Russian National Research Medical University. Among this group of drugs, only anti-cancer drugs really work, said Pirogov Alexei Churov of the NI Russia Ministry of Health. They refer to drugs used in immuno-oncology that help artificially stimulate the immune system to fight tumor.
“These are inhibitors of immune checkpoints – anti-CTLA4 and anti-PD-1, monoclonal antibodies. They work. And many types of cancer are now much better treated in patients who don’t respond to other treatments. The next step in that direction is complex cancer, especially glioma. It is the creation of antitumor vaccines for strains.”
The expert says that if we talk about aging, it is still very difficult to target the immune system. However, according to Churov, the same anti-cancer drugs – checkpoint inhibitors (anti-PD1) are being tested in clinical trials as senolytic, that is, anti-aging drugs.
