The Federal Air Transport Agency has assigned a red (maximum) distress code on the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) scale in connection with the ash eruption of the Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka. This was reported by the press service departments.
“In order to ensure flight safety, an announcement (NOTAM) has been made to flight personnel in accordance with international ICAO standards. This volcanic ash release has been assigned a red (maximum) hazard code on the ICAO scale.
NOTAM instructs flight crews to consider the characteristics of this natural phenomenon when choosing a route for any flight.
Flight crews need to constantly check for changes in meteorological information for safety reasons.
It was learned earlier that the Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka threw an ash column 12 km high. This was announced by the regional branch of the United Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences. According to the service, the height of the arc was about 12 km. The volcanic eruption began on 11 April at 00:54 local time. The height of the ash cloud ejected by the volcano reached 20 km, and the size of the plume rose from 250 to 400 km.
According to the Ministry of Emergencies, the ash cloud may reach Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, which is 450 km from Shiveluch. Shiveluch is one of the largest volcanoes in Kamchatka.
