Doctors from the University of California found that the antibiotic doxycycline reduced the risk of contracting STDs by almost 70%. The results of the study were published in the journal New England Journal of Medicine.
The scientists collected a sample of 500 people who had gonorrhea, chlamydia, early syphilis, or HIV. Of these, 327 patients were taking HIV prevention drugs because they were living with an infected partner.
All participants were divided into two groups: the first received standard medical care, and the second received the antibiotic doxycycline with sustained release of a substance at a dose of 200 milligrams. Also, the drug had to be taken within 24 hours of condom-free sex, but no later than 72 hours. Every three months, all volunteers were tested for diseases.
The results of the study showed that diseases in the second group were diagnosed two-thirds less than in the first group.
