Scientists from the University of Milan found that men are better at distinguishing emotions displayed on emoji than facial expressions. The results of the research were published in the journal behavioral science.
The researchers recruited 96 students and asked them to quickly look at photos of men and women with different facial expressions—two seconds at most. Participants had to explain what emotions the people in the photo were expressing. The experiment was then repeated using emoji images.
The results showed that men rate emotions on emoji much better than on facial expressions, especially when it comes to negative emotions like anger, sadness or disgust. Women, on the other hand, respond better to facial expressions.
“We think that these results can be explained by the fact that digital images are less ambiguous. This makes them easier to interpret correctly. It is also undeniable that women, as a rule, are better developed emotional intelligence, which helps them accurately identify other people’s emotions, ”said the scientist.
