Scientists at Imperial College London have shown that injections of the hormone kisspeptin can increase sex drive in both men and women. Research published JAMA Network Open.
Hypoactive sexual desire disorder is a condition in which people have a low libido. It affects 10% of women and 8% of men worldwide and can have psychological and social consequences. It has been previously shown that kisspeptin can increase the response to sexual stimuli in men with normal sexual desire. Kisspeptin is a natural hormone that stimulates the release of other reproductive hormones in the body.
The new clinical trial involved 32 premenopausal women and 32 men with hypoactive sexual desire disorder. All patients underwent MRI brain scans as well as blood and behavioral tests.
The introduction of Kisspeptin improved the processing of sexual stimuli in the brains of men and women and increased their libido. In men, the hormone also improved erections by 56%. All participants tolerated the therapy well and had no side effects.
The treatment options available in women are limited and have significant side effects. There are currently no approved treatments for men. The study shows for the first time that kisspeptin is a potentially safe and effective treatment for people with low sexual desire.
