“Search archives” Yandex now allows you to search for texts with pre-revolutionary spelling. This was reported by the press service of the company.
Before the Bolsheviks came to power in Russia, the orthographic rules of the Russian language were different. The letter “I” and a number of other signs were used, some suffixes and suffixes are spelled differently, for example, “Samago apples are the best variety.” The reform, the development of which took place before the revolution, simplified the written Russian language and freed it from a number of atavisms.
Yandex’s Archive Search service provides access to 2.5 million pages of encrypted archive documents. The new version of its algorithm allows you to search for the necessary information in the catalog or in the search bar, taking into account the pre-reform letter and spelling features.
The company’s experts trained the neural network on a data array of hundreds of thousands of handwritten lines from actual texts of the 18th and 19th centuries and tens of millions of generated examples. The training materials themselves were marked and decoded by experts, who also checked the recognition quality. “Searching in the archives” will increase the productivity of the work of historians, sociologists, demographers, genealogists and will help those who are looking for information about their families.
The first fund presented in the service was the Moscow Main Archive, it was on materials that the developers trained the neural network.
