Scientists from George Washington University have found that infection with COVID-19 increases the risk of death of pregnant women by seven times. Research published BMJ Global Health.
Researchers collected patient data from 12 countries, including the United States. In total, more than 13 thousand pregnant women participated. Scientists have found that pregnant women with COVID-19 infection are seven times more likely to die during pregnancy or childbirth than those who are not infected.
They were three times more likely to be admitted to intensive care, 23 times more likely to develop pneumonia, 5 times more likely to form a blood clot, and 15 times more likely to be on a ventilator.
Their babies were also twice as likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit.
The authors noted that despite the very serious health risks, more than 80 countries still do not recommend that all pregnant and breastfeeding women be vaccinated against COVID.
Women themselves and their doctors often refuse to vaccinate or revaccinate because they do not believe COVID-19 poses a risk to young women or are unsure of the safety of the vaccine during pregnancy.
This study provides strong evidence that COVID-19 is a threat during pregnancy.
