Followers of Amar es para siempre (Antena 3) will remember her as Laura, Ortegas’ youngest daughter, but Deputy Velila (Madrid, 1995) had already made her television debut three years ago with the TV series ‘Anclados’. Next would come the ‘Cathedral of the Sea’, ‘Hospital del Valle’, among others… and ‘Yreal’ (Playz), A very groundbreaking horror and action series that will serve as an experience to bring Antonia to life. “Garcia!” Sherry from HBO Max Based on the (wholly already existing) homonymous comic. Because here he also tests his physical resistance. And it turns out elegant.
Antonia is a journalism intern who is presented with a life-changing research topic. Because it’s not every day you encounter a super agent created by Franco, who was frozen in an unfamiliar Spain and resurrected 60 years later.
What adventures he had!
Mad. We didn’t know what we were doing.
In Garcia! There’s action, there’s comedy, there’s drama…
There’s a little bit of everything. It has action, adventure, and a political plot, but as the chapters progress, it turns from a series of punches and fights to something more emotional, so to speak, without losing its adventurous spirit.
Do you have your own action scenes?
More. There were things that were not planned for me to do, but I saw them as feasible and wanted to be allowed to try. Although obviously there are things that no player can do because we don’t know, like explosions, where you fly away. Both Francisco and I had two experts who played GarcÃa and Antonia and taught us to position ourselves, to throw…
Did you need physical preparation?
Yes, not physically changing like Francisco did, because Antonia’s body is mine and luckily I didn’t have to change it. But yes, my strength to withstand how many times you run away. You won’t be successful if you don’t have a stomach strong enough to withstand the time it hangs from the bridge.
“If you don’t have a strong stomach, it will hold up when Antonia hangs from the bridge…”
There were also virtual reality series. Was it complicated?
Two special effects companies, El Ranchito and Lanspost, recreated the portion of Antonia that reaches the Valley of the Fallen and enters the basilica. The La Piedad statue was a 3D reconstruction. Great job. We recorded this in the middle of an abandoned highway!
As with ‘Yrreal’ it will be difficult to record as it has a very specific aesthetic.
It’s easier when your partner is in front of you, but I’ve gotten used to the fact that a lot of things are lies in audiovisuals. Because sometimes you look at your partner but on camera it’s like you’re looking at Parla. There is a sequence of short shots of me and my partner that we have to do separately. you get used to it
Is it true that it was your idea that Antonia spoke so fast?
When I got to the ‘casting’ I didn’t know it was a comic book and it had a branch that I thought I should get tired of and each episode was going to be three hours long. The offer I got was that he was a fast talker. And it’s true that it does cause concern. “For God’s sake, shut up!” There are moments when you say But it’s a character trait. Before I went to shoot, I would rap until I got it right because otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to go that fast. My biggest fear was not being understood.
Didn’t you know it was a comic book?
Before the casting, I had no idea. I misplaced the information somewhere. And I went crazy. Since it was an hour from the first cast to the second, I frantically went to a cafe looking for information. But he was lucky he hadn’t read it before because the character in the comic is different from the one we created. Drier. More strong.
Antonia is clumsy, a complete disaster, but loving.
What I loved most about the production was how clumsy it was because it gave me the opportunity to play a different character. Because of the way they run, they said, “Find the player a coach so he can learn to run.” But we deliberately made Antonia awkward and we certainly didn’t want her to be noticed. With our thoughts: Evidence obtained!
Finally, there is no typical sexual tension between the protagonists.
Theirs is just a fraternal relationship. Antonia is never sexualized. Not even in scenes with her boyfriend. And that’s always usually spilled around.
I said to my father, “Don’t be jealous, but Emilio Gutiérrez Caba is the best imaginary father they can give me.”
GarcÃa discovers a world where there are cell phones, oat milk and men can marry.
It’s nice to discover with him how difficult it is to understand a society that is coming for you. Impossible. And Antonia, who also begins by judging her father’s past, understands a little about where things come from. Even if I don’t accept them. So in season one – hopefully there will be more – Antonia starts out as a child and ends as a woman. Or at least it starts to happen.
Working with Emilio Gutiérrez Caba is a great pleasure, isn’t it?
When I saw the cast – apart from working with Francisco I already knew – that was what I liked the most and it gave me more headaches. I said to my dad, “Don’t be jealous, but this is the best imaginary dad I’ve ever had.” Out of what I had and they were great. But Emilio is one of the actors I’ve never worked with and admired the most. And my father said to me: I understand you. To equate a professional with criteria… With the respect it deserves, of course.
Were they aware that they were doing something different?
We were not aware at first. We thought: this could be a miracle or a trick. Because what they want to tell is very ambitious… But it seems that we succeeded. The biggest fear was code. Have a series’ code of a similar tone, assuming superheroes are in quotes, but none, and that of a comic, but realistically, because the characters have capes.
I see you’re already thinking about the second season.
If only! GarcÃa and Antonia must follow his adventures.
