Scientists from the University of California have identified four key factors that help you wake up in the morning without problems and not feel sleepy throughout the day. The work of the research group, published in the journal Nature Communications.
The group recruited 833 volunteers. For two weeks, the scientists recorded the amount and quality of the food the subjects consumed, their physical activity, sleep patterns, and blood sugar levels. Participants took turns assessing their daytime health and sleep quality each day.
After analyzing all the data, the scientists identified four factors that affect whether a person gets enough sleep. The first is the sleep profile: duration, time, and effectiveness. The more people sleep and the later they get up, the better they sleep and feel during the day.
The second factor was the amount of exercise done the previous day. The more active the subjects were during the day, the better they slept. At the same time, nighttime activity had the opposite effect.
The third factor is breakfast. In order to wake up better in the morning, you should include plenty of carbohydrates in your breakfast. At the same time, on the contrary, a large amount of protein interferes with sleep.
The final factor is the rise in blood sugar after breakfast, which includes a pure glucose drink. It has been associated with poor waking quality. The lower blood sugar response observed after participants regularly ate a high-carb breakfast, by contrast, improved the participants’ condition.
In future work, the team plans to explore the mechanisms underlying these correlations.
