Novelties and bestsellers: what was presented at the Chinese air show Airshow China – 2022 Russia presented aerospace and air defense systems at Airshow China 08.11.2022 at 18:18

In addition to China, important players of the arms market such as the USA, France, Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia and Russia will take part in the Airshow China 2022 air show. Around 100 aircraft of various types and other aviation equipment are expected to be displayed within the framework of the hall. It is China that will dominate the exhibition, which will present a range of aviation military equipment for the first time in this exhibition. At the same time, according to the Global Times newspaper, as part of the hall, the Chinese army will also present equipment and weapons for the ground forces.

As part of the Zhuhai air show, Beijing will show the YU-20 heavy tanker aircraft for the first time.

The first flight of its prototype took place in 2013, but now this transport aircraft will be shown live to the audience in an air tanker version equipped with Russian D-30KP2 engines (its own more powerful WS-20 engines are still being tested), according to representatives of the PRC, heavy military transport aircraft, the world on the aviation market it was represented only by the Russian Il-76 and its modifications, as well as the American C-17 Globemaster III. China will no longer be dependent on the import of aircraft of this class with its YU-20, and Beijing expects to procure them for export.

Another launch at Airshow China-2022 is the anticipated demonstration of China’s 5th generation fighter, the J-20.

These have been in service with the PLA since 2018, and the Chengdu Aerospace Corporation, after which the fighter is named, has produced more than 150 of them. The Chinese traditionally do not reveal the secrets of their weapons and do not show military equipment. At the same time, Beijing claims that the J-20 is the third “invisible” aircraft in the world, after the American F-22 and F-35 warplanes. Chinese military experts have repeatedly given high marks to the Russian 5th generation Su-57 fighter, noting its high maneuverability and powerful armament. At the same time, this aircraft was excluded from the number of invisibility technologies.

It was planned as part of the Zhuhai air show and a demonstration of the already well-known Chinese attack aircraft Wing Loong 3. It is exported to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Kazakhstan and has proven itself well – the UAV can carry up to two tons of missile weapons. The Chinese “Pterodactyl”, which is similar in both features and shape to the American MQ-1 Predator, is selling for a million dollars, which is significantly lower than the price of the Chinese MQ-1 Predator or even the MQ, according to Reuters. -9 Reaper ($30 million per unit).

The KJ-500A airborne early warning system will also be shown at the air show. This is a fairly recent development of a Chinese turboprop aircraft, but this AWACS has been operated by the PLA Air Force since 2018. This complex was first presented by China at a similar air show in 2016.

“Innovations at international-class aviation exhibitions are extremely rare,” aviation expert Colonel Vladimir Talanov told socialbites.ca. “This is the final part of many years of painstaking work by designers, engineers, test pilots and proven aircraft operation. China now demonstrates not a single sample of airborne equipment, including military ones, but the operation of the entire production complex. The Chinese are now showing what really exists, what really exists. And this is more than four thousand combat aircraft, of which the share of fighters of our own production is increasing. The history of “Chinese fake” is a thing of the past. However, they are also happy to use Russian modern Su-35 and Su-30MKK warplanes, choosing only the best and developing their own.”

Alexander Mikheev, Managing Director of the state company Rosoboronexport, praised the pace of development of the Chinese industry, the strong growth of aviation and unmanned technologies in China. Airshow China-2022 came to the opening of the Russian composition at the international air show, noting the high pace of development of Chinese industry. “I would particularly like to point out the strong growth of aviation and unmanned technologies in China,” Mikheev quoted TASS.

Russia, whose products were brought to Zhuhai by Rosoboronexport, also did not display “groundbreaking” weapons at the air show.

Anti-aircraft missile systems S-400 Triumph (China signed a contract for the supply of 4 divisions of such systems in 2014) and S-350 Vityaz, which the Chinese army has been following since 2020, have become traditional.

The fighter jets consist of export versions of the Su-57E, Su-35, Su-34E and MiG-35 aircraft. From helicopters – Ka-52, Mi-28NE and Mi-171Sh. Basically, this is combat aviation, which managed to prove itself during a special operation, and such experience is especially valued.

“The aero show in China already has quite a high prestige and attracts exhibitors from many countries,” a source from Rostec told socialbites.ca. – In no case do we deprive him of interest, but nevertheless we are traditionally preparing for our International Aerospace Hall, which will be held in 2023 in Zhukovsky near Moscow. Participant registration for MAKS-2023 is already open, and the hall is expected to be comprehensive and representative. Naturally, they should have their own “highlights”. For now, no one will open them.”

The 14th Airshow China, attended by 740 companies from 43 countries of the world, started its work at the international air show Zhuhai. socialbites.ca studied the list of presented Chinese novelties and samples of Russian equipment presented at the air show.
