River City Girls Zero expands to PC with enhanced retro action

WayForward has shared a new action trailer for River City Girls Zero in anticipation of its Steam debut. The game originally launched in 1994 on Japan’s Super Famicom, and this marks its first appearance on PC platforms.

River City Girls Zero is a 16-bit, co-op beat ’em up that features four distinct characters: Kunio, Riki, Misako, and Kyoko. The storyline centers on underage heroes who are wrongly accused of a crime, setting them on a mission to clear their names and uncover the true culprits behind the act.

Each fighter brings unique moves and combos to the table, encouraging players to experiment with different playstyles. The title supports solo play as well as a cooperative mode on a single device, inviting friends to join the action in a shared screen experience.

The release notes highlight that the 1994 visuals, soundtrack, and core mechanics have been refreshed with new comedic intro and outro cutscenes, a brand-new animated sequence, and music contributions from Megan McDuffie and DEMONDICE. This blend aims to deliver a nostalgic throwback while providing modern polish that enhances the overall rhythm and pacing of the game. Players are invited to dive into River City’s past and rediscover forgotten chapters of its history.

River City Girls Zero is scheduled to arrive on Steam on September 22. Earlier in the year, the project saw launches on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch, expanding its reach to a wider audience of retro gaming fans and new players alike. Screenshots from the game can be viewed within the official media materials, offering a glimpse at the updated art style and animation that accompany the familiar brawler action.
