Developers from the Russian studio GFA Games are crafting a post-apocalyptic open-world shooter named Pioner, and they recently shared a fresh screenshot that spotlights a foe known as the Disfavored.

In addition to the new images, all of Pioner’s visuals can be explored in the dedicated gallery the team maintains. The developers describe what the players will encounter as they explore the ruinous setting: mutated humans who remain under the control of parasitic fungi. These creatures aren’t your standard undead; their behavior signals more than a simple appetite for survival. Their actions hint at a broader objective beyond basic scavenging, suggesting a larger, ominous plan unfolding on the island.

Disfavored refers to the remnants of humanity that have died in spirit but still bear the marks of infection, their bodies enslaved by parasitic fungi or overtaken by fungal spores. The individuals who fall under this control seem to have shed human feelings and emotions, becoming instruments for the will of the parasites that command them. Unlike traditional zombies, the Disfavored exhibit behavior that points to a higher purpose, executing their masters’ schemes with unwavering resolve across the island.

The early previews also reminded players of other factions that appeared in previous Pioner builds, including bands of raiders, the Brigade faction, and the Istovik conglomerate. These elements contribute to a sandbox that promises tense rivalries and shifting allegiances amid the harsh landscape.

The core emphasis of Pioner lies in blending player-versus-player and player-versus-environment encounters. This balance invites players to clash with one another while also undertaking diverse missions, scavenging for resources, and confronting the unpredictable threats that stalk the world. The development team aims to deliver a comprehensive experience that challenges both combat prowess and strategic planning as players navigate the hazardous terrain and its hidden dangers. While the game’s release is anticipated for this year on PC, there are also plans to bring it to console platforms shortly afterward.

Note: The project continues to evolve as new screenshots and gameplay ideas surface, painting a picture of a living, breathing world where factions contend for control and survival hinges on wit, firepower, and the ability to adapt to ever-changing threats.
