Fans of Baldur’s Gate 3 may be surprised to learn that Larian Studios had already prepared a working build of a fourth game before deciding to pause development. The studio’s leadership disclosed that they did not want to linger in one project for years, choosing instead to explore new horizons and keep the creative energy high.
Sven Vincke spoke about these plans in a candid interview with PC Gamer timed to mark the first anniversary of Baldur’s Gate 3. After wrapping up work on the third installment, the team shifted attention to the next chapter, and a playable build for a potential sequel was already in hand. The idea was to either extend Baldur’s Gate 3 with a substantial add-on or to launch a fourth main installment, but the team ultimately opted to move in a different direction.
I mean, we’d probably have to do it ten times over. And do we really want to do this for the next three years?
— Sven Vincke, Head of Larian Studios
In additional remarks, Vincke explained that the decision was driven by a desire not to tether development to a single franchise for an extended period. During a planning session, the question of continuity arose, and the team agreed to shift focus toward new projects rather than continuing to grind on one property for many years.
Vincke offered a frank assessment of the mood inside the studio after the decision took hold. We don’t think the developers have ever felt so liberated, he noted in a moment of candid reflection. That sense of relief was echoed by many in the team as they embraced a broader creative agenda rather than sticking with one lineage.
As a result, the company announced in March that it would not pursue a direct Baldur’s Gate 3 sequel at this time. Instead, the studio began laying groundwork for two unannounced titles grounded in different universes, with ambitions described as among the strongest in the studio’s history. The shift signaled a strategic pivot toward diversification and fresh storytelling ventures rather than resting on the laurels of a single success.
Rumors have circulated that Larian may revisit other beloved franchises, with talks mentioning potential new games inspired by Fallout or Ultima. Observers note that such possibilities align with the studio’s renewed emphasis on experimentation and cross-genre exploration while maintaining a high level of production quality and narrative depth.
Recently, news also arrived that a Gothic Remake trailer has been released, highlighting ongoing activity in the broader action-RPG ecosystem. These developments collectively underscore Larian’s renewed emphasis on variety, ambition, and a willingness to pursue multiple creative paths at once, all while continuing to push the technical boundaries that define its work.
